At Independent Physicians Medical Center (IPMC) in Northeast Philadelphia, we offer advanced CT imaging in a comfortable outpatient setting, with clear instructions to help you prepare and ensure accurate results.
What Is a CT Scan?
A CT scan uses a combination of X-rays and computer technology to produce detailed images of your body. It’s commonly used to evaluate conditions such as:
- Internal injuries or trauma
- Tumors or masses
- Infections
- Bone fractures
- Blood vessel abnormalities
- Abdominal or chest issues
Your physician will explain why the test is needed and how it fits into your diagnosis or treatment plan.
Preparing for Your CT Scan
Most CT scans require minimal preparation, but following the instructions carefully helps ensure the best possible images.
1. Follow Fasting Instructions
For many CT scans—especially those using contrast dye—you may be asked not to eat or drink for several hours before the appointment. This helps reduce the risk of nausea and ensures clearer imaging.
2. Tell Your Doctor About Your Health History
Before your scan, be sure to inform your physician if you:
- Are pregnant or think you might be
- Have allergies (especially to contrast materials)
- Have kidney, thyroid, or other medical conditions
- Are taking any medications, including diabetes medications
- Have asthma or past reactions to imaging dyes
3. Wear Comfortable Clothing
You may be asked to wear a hospital gown and should remove:
- Jewelry
- Metal objects
- Glasses
- Hairpins
- Dentures or removable dental work
Metal can interfere with the scan images.
4. Arrive Early and Bring Important Information
Arrive a little early so you can complete a short medical history form and ask any last-minute questions. Bring your ID, insurance information, and a list of current medications.
What to Expect During the Scan
On the day of your CT scan:
- A trained technologist will position you on a padded table.
- You’ll lie still while the scanner rotates around you to capture images.
- If contrast dye is needed, it may be given by injection or orally before the scan.
The procedure is painless and usually takes 10–30 minutes, depending on the area being scanned and whether contrast is used.
After the CT Scan
In most cases, you can resume your normal activities immediately after the scan. If you received contrast dye, you may be advised to drink extra water to help flush it from your system. Your referring doctor will receive your results and discuss them with you once available.
