How to Prepare for Your Mammogram

Preparing for your mammogram is simple and helps ensure the most accurate results. To make your appointment as smooth as possible, please follow these preparation guidelines.

Note: Please be sure to print and fill out this form prior to your mammography appointment: Mammography Questionnaire

Leave jewelry at home

On the day of your mammogram, please leave all jewelry at home, especially in the breast and chest area, as it can interfere with the imaging process.

Understand your prescription

When scheduling your mammogram, be sure to check if your prescription is labeled “routine,” “screening,” “diagnostic,” or “additional views.” This information helps us ensure you receive the right type of imaging for your needs.

Previous mammograms

If you are having a routine or screening mammogram, your last mammogram must have been done at least one year ago.

If this is your first mammogram at IPMC, please bring any previous mammogram films with you. This allows the radiologist to compare your current images with past ones, which is important for accurate interpretation.

Avoid creams, powders, and deodorants

On the day of your appointment, please do not apply any creams, powders, deodorants, or ointments in the breast or armpit area. These products can interfere with the images or appear as abnormalities, leading to the need for further testing.

Have questions?

If you’re unsure about any part of your mammogram preparation, or if you need assistance with your prescription or previous films, please don’t hesitate to contact your referring doctor or primary care physician. They can provide clarification and help you prepare for the exam.
