When your doctor needs to evaluate the bones, joints, and structures of your neck quickly and in fine detail, a cervical spine CT scan is often the test of choice. It’s particularly valuable after trauma, for detecting fractures, and for evaluating bony conditions that may be causing neck pain or neurological symptoms.
At Independent Physicians Medical Center (IPMC) in Northeast Philadelphia, we offer cervical spine CT imaging with our advanced Siemens scanner in a comfortable outpatient setting.
What Is a Cervical Spine CT Scan?
A cervical spine CT scan creates detailed cross-sectional images of the seven vertebrae in your neck (C1 through C7), the joints between them (including the facet joints and uncovertebral joints), the bony spinal canal, and the surrounding structures. It provides superior bone detail compared to both X-rays and MRI, making it the preferred test for evaluating fractures, dislocations, and degenerative bony changes.
Images can be reconstructed in multiple planes (sagittal, coronal, and axial) and as three-dimensional models, giving your doctor a comprehensive view of your cervical spine anatomy.
Why Would Your Doctor Order a Cervical Spine CT?
Common reasons include:
- Trauma evaluation. After a car accident, fall, or significant impact, cervical spine CT is the standard imaging test to check for fractures and dislocations. It is far more sensitive than X-rays for detecting cervical spine fractures
- CT can detect subtle fractures of the vertebral body, pedicles, laminae, lateral masses, and the odontoid process (dens) of C2 that may be invisible on standard X-rays
- Degenerative disc disease and bone spurs. CT shows narrowing of the disc spaces, osteophyte (bone spur) formation, and bony foraminal stenosis (narrowing of the openings where nerves exit) in excellent detail
- Spinal stenosis. Bony narrowing of the spinal canal is well evaluated by CT
- Post-surgical evaluation. Checking the position and integrity of cervical spine hardware (plates, screws, cages) after fusion surgery
- Pre-surgical planning. Providing detailed bone anatomy for surgeons planning cervical spine procedures
- When MRI is not an option. CT serves as an alternative for patients with MRI-incompatible implants or severe claustrophobia
- Suspected infection or tumor. Particularly when bony involvement needs to be assessed
How to Prepare and What to Expect
Remove necklaces, earrings, and metal objects near your neck. You’ll lie on a table that slides through the scanner. The scan focuses on your neck area and typically takes only 5 to 15 minutes. Contrast dye may be used for certain indications. The procedure is painless.
After the scan, you can resume normal activities immediately. A board-certified radiologist will review the images and send a detailed report to your referring physician.
