How to Prepare for Your Mammogram

Here are some things you can expect to be asked if you are scheduling a mammogram:

On the day of your appointment please leave all jewelry at home.

Does your prescription say “routine”, “screening”, “diagnostic” or “additional views” on it?

  • If you are having a routine or screening mammogram, your previous test must be at least a year ago.

Is this your first mammogram at IPMC?

  • Patients who have had previous mammographic studies must obtain their films from the facility where they had them done! This is done so that the reading Radiologist has something to compare your new films to. It is done for your benefit so please make an effort to bring your films with you to the exam.

On the day of the appointment, please do not use any creams, powders, deodorants or ointments in the breast or armpit area.

  • These products can occlude the image or can show up as abnormalities causing your doctor to request further testing.

If you are unsure about any part of this please contact your referring doctor or your primary care physician.
