CT Scan for Uterine Cancer: How Imaging Helps with Staging and Monitoring

Uterine cancer is one of the most common gynecological cancers, and while it is typically diagnosed through biopsy, CT imaging plays an important supporting role in determining how far the cancer has spread, planning treatment, and monitoring for recurrence.

At Independent Physicians Medical Center (IPMC) in Northeast Philadelphia, we offer advanced CT scanning to support your gynecological oncology team with accurate, timely imaging in our comfortable outpatient facility.

How Are CT Scans Used for Uterine Cancer?

Doctors don’t usually rely on CT scans to make the initial diagnosis of uterine cancer — that role typically belongs to endometrial biopsy and transvaginal ultrasound. However, once a diagnosis is confirmed, CT becomes a valuable tool for cancer staging and monitoring.

Specifically, CT scans help doctors determine whether the cancer has spread beyond the uterus to nearby lymph nodes, the bladder, rectum, or other pelvic structures. They can also reveal whether cancer has metastasized to more distant organs such as the lungs, liver, or bones. Studies have found that CT scans can be highly accurate at detecting cancer recurrences in the pelvic area — one review reported 92 percent accuracy for detecting pelvic cancer recurrence.

CT is also used to monitor the response to treatment (surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy) and to check for any signs that the cancer has returned after treatment is completed.

What to Expect During the Scan

You may be asked to fast for a few hours before the scan. Contrast dye may be given orally, through an IV, or both, depending on what your doctor needs to see. You’ll change into a gown, lie on a padded table, and slide through the ring-shaped CT scanner.

The scan typically takes about 20 minutes. You may feel a brief warm sensation from the IV contrast. The technologist will ask you to hold your breath briefly and will be nearby throughout the procedure. The scan is painless.

After Your CT Scan

There is no recovery time. You can eat, drink, and resume normal activities immediately. A board-certified radiologist will analyze the images and send a comprehensive report to your oncologist or referring physician, who will discuss the findings and treatment plan with you.
